{"cve":"CVE-2023-40273","nvd":{"published":"2023-08-23T16:15:09.803","modified":"2026-06-17T06:16:58.270","status":"Modified","description":"The session fixation vulnerability allowed the authenticated user to continue accessing Airflow webserver even after the password of the user has been reset by the admin - up until the expiry of the session of the user. Other than manually cleaning the session database (for database session backend), or changing the secure_key and restarting the webserver, there were no mechanisms to force-logout the user (and all other users with that).\n\nWith this fix implemented, when using the database session backend, the existing sessions of the user are invalidated when the password of the user is reset. When using the securecookie session backend, the sessions are NOT invalidated and still require changing the secure key and restarting the webserver (and logging out all other users), but the user resetting the password is informed about it with a flash message warning displayed in the UI. Documentation is also updated explaining this behaviour.\n\nUsers of Apache Airflow are advised to upgrade to version 2.7.0 or newer to mitigate the risk associated with this vulnerability.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":8.0},"cwes":["CWE-384"],"references":["https://github.com/apache/airflow/pull/33347","https://lists.apache.org/thread/9rdmv8ln4y4ncbyrlmjrsj903x4l80nj","https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2023/08/23/1","https://github.com/apache/airflow/pull/33347","https://lists.apache.org/thread/9rdmv8ln4y4ncbyrlmjrsj903x4l80nj"],"products":["apache:airflow"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:39:14.809778102+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2023-40273","score":0.01845,"percentile":0.79049,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-pm87-24wq-r8w9","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-pm87-24wq-r8w9","summary":"Apache Airflow Session Fixation vulnerability","modified":"2024-09-11T20:20:57.913049Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"apache-airflow","purl":"pkg:pypi/apache-airflow","ranges":["<2.7.0rc2"],"fixed":["2.7.0rc2"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2023-158","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2023-158","summary":"","modified":"2026-06-10T17:00:22.062951695Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"apache-airflow","purl":"pkg:pypi/apache-airflow","ranges":["<2.7.1rc1"],"fixed":["2.7.1rc1"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
