The issue occurs because a ZIP archive may include a benign file (such as an ordinary .JPG file) and also a folder that has the same name as the benign file, and the contents of the folder (which may include executable content) are processed during an attempt to access only the benign file. This was exploited in the wild in April through October 2023.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.8},"cwes":["CWE-345","CWE-351"],"references":["http://packetstormsecurity.com/files/174573/WinRAR-Remote-Code-Execution.html","https://blog.google/threat-analysis-group/government-backed-actors-exploiting-winrar-vulnerability/","https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37236100","https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/winrar-zero-day-exploited-since-april-to-hack-trading-accounts/","https://www.group-ib.com/blog/cve-2023-38831-winrar-zero-day/"],"products":["rarlab:winrar"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:39:14.809778102+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2023-38831","score":0.99815,"percentile":0.9996,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":{"cve":"CVE-2023-38831","date_added":"2023-08-24","due_date":"2023-09-14","vendor":"RARLAB","product":"WinRAR","known_ransomware":true},"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
