{"cve":"CVE-2023-34091","nvd":{"published":"2023-06-01T17:15:10.873","modified":"2026-06-17T06:02:52.443","status":"Modified","description":"Kyverno is a policy engine designed for Kubernetes. In versions of Kyverno prior to 1.10.0, resources which have the `deletionTimestamp` field defined can bypass validate, generate, or mutate-existing policies, even in cases where the `validationFailureAction` field is set to `Enforce`. This situation occurs as resources pending deletion were being consciously exempted by Kyverno, as a way to reduce processing load as policies are typically not applied to objects which are being deleted. However, this could potentially result in allowing a malicious user to leverage the Kubernetes finalizers feature by setting a finalizer which causes the Kubernetes API server to set the `deletionTimestamp` and then not completing the delete operation as a way to explicitly to bypass a Kyverno policy. Note that this is not applicable to Kubernetes Pods but, as an example, a Kubernetes Service resource can be manipulated using an indefinite finalizer to bypass policies. This is resolved in Kyverno 1.10.0. There is no known workaround.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N","score":6.5},"cwes":["CWE-285"],"references":["https://github.com/kyverno/kyverno/releases/tag/v1.10.0","https://github.com/kyverno/kyverno/security/advisories/GHSA-hq4m-4948-64cc","https://github.com/kyverno/kyverno/releases/tag/v1.10.0","https://github.com/kyverno/kyverno/security/advisories/GHSA-hq4m-4948-64cc"],"products":["nirmata:kyverno"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:38:24.161619714+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2023-34091","score":0.00497,"percentile":0.42616,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-hq4m-4948-64cc","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-hq4m-4948-64cc","summary":"Kyverno resource with a deletionTimestamp may allow policy circumvention","modified":"2026-08-07T08:12:31.320239807Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/kyverno/kyverno","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/kyverno/kyverno","ranges":["<1.10.0"],"fixed":["1.10.0"]}]},{"id":"GO-2023-1819","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2023-1819","summary":"Kyverno resource with a deletionTimestamp may allow policy circumvention in github.com/kyverno/kyverno","modified":"2026-08-07T08:12:24.202437663Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/kyverno/kyverno","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/kyverno/kyverno","ranges":["<1.10.0"],"fixed":["1.10.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
