{"cve":"CVE-2023-3326","nvd":{"published":"2023-06-22T17:15:44.833","modified":"2026-06-17T06:13:49.523","status":"Modified","description":"pam_krb5 authenticates a user by essentially running kinit with the password, getting a ticket-granting ticket (tgt) from the Kerberos KDC (Key Distribution Center) over the network, as a way to verify the password. However, if a keytab is not provisioned on the system, pam_krb5 has no way to validate the response from the KDC, and essentially trusts the tgt provided over the network as being valid. In a non-default FreeBSD installation that leverages pam_krb5 for authentication and does not have a keytab provisioned, an attacker that is able to control both the password and the KDC responses can return a valid tgt, allowing authentication to occur for any user on the system.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":9.8},"cwes":["CWE-287","CWE-303"],"references":["https://security.FreeBSD.org/advisories/FreeBSD-SA-23:04.pam_krb5.asc","https://security.FreeBSD.org/advisories/FreeBSD-SA-23:09.pam_krb5.asc","https://security.netapp.com/advisory/ntap-20230714-0005/","https://security.FreeBSD.org/advisories/FreeBSD-SA-23:04.pam_krb5.asc","https://security.FreeBSD.org/advisories/FreeBSD-SA-23:09.pam_krb5.asc"],"products":["freebsd:freebsd"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:38:30.124994567+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2023-3326","score":0.01098,"percentile":0.65636,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
