{"cve":"CVE-2023-29198","nvd":{"published":"2023-09-06T21:15:11.560","modified":"2026-06-17T05:49:35.453","status":"Modified","description":"Electron is a framework which lets you write cross-platform desktop applications using JavaScript, HTML and CSS. Electron apps using `contextIsolation` and `contextBridge` are affected. This is a context isolation bypass, meaning that code running in the main world context in the renderer can reach into the isolated Electron context and perform privileged actions. This issue is only exploitable if an API exposed to the main world via `contextBridge` can return an object or array that contains a javascript object which cannot be serialized, for instance, a canvas rendering context. This would normally result in an exception being thrown `Error: object could not be cloned`. The app side workaround is to ensure that such a case is not possible. Ensure all values returned from a function exposed over the context bridge are supported. This issue has been fixed in versions `25.0.0-alpha.2`, `24.0.1`, `23.2.3`, and `22.3.6`.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":8.5},"cwes":["CWE-754"],"references":["https://github.com/electron/electron/security/advisories/GHSA-p7v2-p9m8-qqg7","https://www.electronjs.org/docs/latest/api/context-bridge#parameter--error--return-type-support","https://github.com/electron/electron/security/advisories/GHSA-p7v2-p9m8-qqg7","https://www.electronjs.org/docs/latest/api/context-bridge#parameter--error--return-type-support"],"products":["electronjs:electron"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:39:24.235896374+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2023-29198","score":0.0059,"percentile":0.48215,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-p7v2-p9m8-qqg7","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-p7v2-p9m8-qqg7","summary":"Electron context isolation bypass via nested unserializable return value","modified":"2026-09-10T03:49:58.321620166Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"electron","purl":"pkg:npm/electron","ranges":["<22.3.6"],"fixed":["22.3.6"]},{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"electron","purl":"pkg:npm/electron","ranges":[">=23.0.0-alpha.1 <23.2.3"],"fixed":["23.2.3"]},{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"electron","purl":"pkg:npm/electron","ranges":[">=24.0.0-alpha.1 <24.0.1"],"fixed":["24.0.1"]},{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"electron","purl":"pkg:npm/electron","ranges":[">=25.0.0-alpha.1 <25.0.0-alpha.2"],"fixed":["25.0.0-alpha.2"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
