Prior to version 3.9.15, vm2 was not properly handling host objects passed to `Error.prepareStackTrace` in case of unhandled async errors. A threat actor could bypass the sandbox protections to gain remote code execution rights on the host running the sandbox. This vulnerability was patched in the release of version 3.9.15 of vm2. There are no known workarounds.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":9.8},"cwes":["CWE-913"],"references":["https://gist.github.com/seongil-wi/2a44e082001b959bfe304b62121fb76d","https://github.com/patriksimek/vm2/commit/d534e5785f38307b70d3aac1945260a261a94d50","https://github.com/patriksimek/vm2/issues/515","https://github.com/patriksimek/vm2/security/advisories/GHSA-7jxr-cg7f-gpgv","https://gist.github.com/seongil-wi/2a44e082001b959bfe304b62121fb76d"],"products":["vm2_project:vm2"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:37:48.383111019+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2023-29017","score":0.63186,"percentile":0.99204,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-7jxr-cg7f-gpgv","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-7jxr-cg7f-gpgv","summary":"vm2 vulnerable to sandbox escape","modified":"2026-09-10T03:49:53.632919224Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"vm2","purl":"pkg:npm/vm2","ranges":["<3.9.15"],"fixed":["3.9.15"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
