{"cve":"CVE-2023-28433","nvd":{"published":"2023-03-22T21:15:18.340","modified":"2026-06-17T05:47:42.330","status":"Modified","description":"Minio is a Multi-Cloud Object Storage framework. All users on Windows prior to version RELEASE.2023-03-20T20-16-18Z are impacted. MinIO fails to filter the `\\` character, which allows for arbitrary object placement across buckets. As a result, a user with low privileges, such as an access key, service account, or STS credential, which only has permission to `PutObject` in a specific bucket, can create an admin user. This issue is patched in RELEASE.2023-03-20T20-16-18Z. There are no known workarounds.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":8.8},"cwes":["CWE-668"],"references":["https://github.com/minio/minio/commit/8d6558b23649f613414c8527b58973fbdfa4d1b8","https://github.com/minio/minio/commit/b3c54ec81e0a06392abfb3a1ffcdc80c6fbf6ebc","https://github.com/minio/minio/releases/tag/RELEASE.2023-03-20T20-16-18Z","https://github.com/minio/minio/security/advisories/GHSA-w23q-4hw3-2pp6","https://github.com/minio/minio/commit/8d6558b23649f613414c8527b58973fbdfa4d1b8"],"products":["minio:minio"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:37:48.383111019+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2023-28433","score":0.00981,"percentile":0.62269,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-w23q-4hw3-2pp6","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-w23q-4hw3-2pp6","summary":"Minio vulnerable to Privilege Escalation on Windows via Path separator manipulation","modified":"2026-10-08T08:11:02.392575410Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/minio/minio","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/minio/minio","ranges":["<0.0.0-202303200735"],"fixed":["0.0.0-202303200735"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
