Prior to version 0.10.2, the heap initialization methods were missing a minimum size check for the given heap size argument. This could lead to out-of-bound writes when a heap was initialized with a size smaller than `3 * size_of::<usize>` because of metadata write operations. This vulnerability impacts all the initialization functions on the `Heap` and `LockedHeap` types, including `Heap::new`, `Heap::init`, `Heap::init_from_slice`, and `LockedHeap::new`. It also affects multiple uses of the `Heap::extend` method. Version 0.10.2 contains a patch for the issue. As a workaround, ensure that the heap is only initialized with a size larger than `3 * size_of::<usize>` and that the `Heap::extend` method is only called with sizes larger than `2 * size_of::<usize>()`. Also, ensure that the total heap size is (and stays) a multiple of `2 * size_of::<usize>()`.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":9.8},"cwes":["CWE-1284","CWE-119","CWE-787"],"references":["https://github.com/rust-osdev/linked-list-allocator/commit/013b0758643943e8df5b17bbb495460ff47e8bbf","https://github.com/rust-osdev/linked-list-allocator/security/advisories/GHSA-xg8p-34w2-j49j","https://github.com/rust-osdev/linked-list-allocator/commit/013b0758643943e8df5b17bbb495460ff47e8bbf","https://github.com/rust-osdev/linked-list-allocator/security/advisories/GHSA-xg8p-34w2-j49j"],"products":["rust-osdev:linked-list-allocator"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:35:14.992143698+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2022-36086","score":0.0088,"percentile":0.59109,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-xg8p-34w2-j49j","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-xg8p-34w2-j49j","summary":"linked_list_allocator vulnerable to out-of-bound writes on `Heap` initialization and `Heap::extend`","modified":"2023-11-08T04:10:00.309199Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"linked_list_allocator","purl":"pkg:cargo/linked_list_allocator","ranges":["<0.10.2"],"fixed":["0.10.2"]}]},{"id":"RUSTSEC-2022-0063","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/RUSTSEC-2022-0063","summary":"Multiple vulnerabilities resulting in out-of-bounds writes","modified":"2026-10-12T18:00:02.664470642Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"linked_list_allocator","purl":"pkg:cargo/linked_list_allocator","ranges":[">=0.0.0-0 <0.10.2"],"fixed":["0.10.2"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
