Versions prior to 1.5.8 were found to be subject to code injection on windows. This impacts users that use Shescape (any API function) to escape arguments for cmd.exe on Windows An attacker can omit all arguments following their input by including a line feed character (`'\\n'`) in the payload. This bug has been patched in [v1.5.8] which you can upgrade to now. No further changes are required. Alternatively, line feed characters (`'\\n'`) can be stripped out manually or the user input can be made the last argument (this only limits the impact).","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":9.8},"cwes":["CWE-74"],"references":["https://github.com/ericcornelissen/shescape/pull/332","https://github.com/ericcornelissen/shescape/releases/tag/v1.5.8","https://github.com/ericcornelissen/shescape/security/advisories/GHSA-jjc5-fp7p-6f8w","https://github.com/ericcornelissen/shescape/pull/332","https://github.com/ericcornelissen/shescape/releases/tag/v1.5.8"],"products":["shescape_project:shescape"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:34:18.502168378+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2022-31179","score":0.01424,"percentile":0.72901,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-jjc5-fp7p-6f8w","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-jjc5-fp7p-6f8w","summary":"Shescape prior to 1.5.8 vulnerable to insufficient escaping of line feeds for CMD","modified":"2023-11-08T04:09:28.955315Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"shescape","purl":"pkg:npm/shescape","ranges":["<1.5.8"],"fixed":["1.5.8"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
