The server chooses which files/directories are sent to the client. However, the rsync client performs insufficient validation of file names. A malicious rsync server (or Man-in-The-Middle attacker) can overwrite arbitrary files in the rsync client target directory and subdirectories (for example, overwrite the .ssh/authorized_keys file).","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H","score":7.4},"cwes":["CWE-20"],"references":["http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2022/08/02/1","https://github.com/WayneD/rsync/tags","https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce%40lists.fedoraproject.org/message/NMBOJ77A7T7PQCARMDUK75TE6LLESZ3O/","https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce%40lists.fedoraproject.org/message/YRQAI7H4M4RQZ2IWZUEEXECBE5D56BH2/","http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2022/08/02/1"],"products":["fedoraproject:fedora","samba:rsync"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:34:18.502168378+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2022-29154","score":0.02348,"percentile":0.83682,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
