{"cve":"CVE-2022-23648","nvd":{"published":"2022-03-03T14:15:07.973","modified":"2026-06-17T04:30:33.620","status":"Modified","description":"containerd is a container runtime available as a daemon for Linux and Windows. A bug was found in containerd prior to versions 1.6.1, 1.5.10, and 1.14.12 where containers launched through containerd’s CRI implementation on Linux with a specially-crafted image configuration could gain access to read-only copies of arbitrary files and directories on the host. This may bypass any policy-based enforcement on container setup (including a Kubernetes Pod Security Policy) and expose potentially sensitive information. Kubernetes and crictl can both be configured to use containerd’s CRI implementation. This bug has been fixed in containerd 1.6.1, 1.5.10, and 1.4.12. Users should update to these versions to resolve the issue.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N","score":7.5},"cwes":["CWE-200"],"references":["http://packetstormsecurity.com/files/166421/containerd-Image-Volume-Insecure-Handling.html","https://github.com/containerd/containerd/commit/10f428dac7cec44c864e1b830a4623af27a9fc70","https://github.com/containerd/containerd/releases/tag/v1.4.13","https://github.com/containerd/containerd/releases/tag/v1.5.10","https://github.com/containerd/containerd/releases/tag/v1.6.1"],"products":["debian:debian_linux","fedoraproject:fedora","linuxfoundation:containerd"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:28:04.509275555+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2022-23648","score":0.27392,"percentile":0.98065,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-crp2-qrr5-8pq7","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-crp2-qrr5-8pq7","summary":"containerd CRI plugin: Insecure handling of image volumes","modified":"2026-09-10T03:49:17.357851100Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containerd/containerd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containerd/containerd","ranges":["<1.4.13"],"fixed":["1.4.13"]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containerd/containerd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containerd/containerd","ranges":[">=1.5.0 <1.5.10"],"fixed":["1.5.10"]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containerd/containerd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containerd/containerd","ranges":[">=1.6.0 <1.6.1"],"fixed":["1.6.1"]}]},{"id":"GO-2022-0344","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2022-0344","summary":"containerd CRI plugin: Insecure handling of image volumes in github.com/containerd/containerd","modified":"2026-02-04T02:25:09.963295Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containerd/containerd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containerd/containerd","ranges":["<1.4.13",">=1.5.0 <1.5.10",">=1.6.0 <1.6.1"],"fixed":["1.4.13","1.5.10","1.6.1"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
