This is a bypass of [CVE-2022-22143](https://security.snyk.io/vuln/SNYK-JS-CONVICT-2340604). The [fix](https://github.com/mozilla/node-convict/commit/3b86be087d8f14681a9c889d45da7fe3ad9cd880) introduced, relies on the startsWith method and does not prevent the vulnerability: before splitting the path, it checks if it starts with __proto__ or this.constructor.prototype. To bypass this check it's possible to prepend the dangerous paths with any string value followed by a dot, like for example foo.__proto__ or foo.this.constructor.prototype.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":9.8},"cwes":["CWE-1321"],"references":["https://gist.github.com/dellalibera/cebce20e51410acebff1f46afdc89808","https://github.com/mozilla/node-convict/blob/3b86be087d8f14681a9c889d45da7fe3ad9cd880/packages/convict/src/main.js%23L571","https://github.com/mozilla/node-convict/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md%23623---2022-05-07","https://github.com/mozilla/node-convict/commit/1ea0ab19c5208f66509e1c43b0d0f21c1fd29b75","https://snyk.io/vuln/SNYK-JS-CONVICT-2774757"],"products":["mozilla:convict"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:31:59.322382750+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2022-21190","score":0.03974,"percentile":0.90479,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-jjf5-wx3j-3fv7","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-jjf5-wx3j-3fv7","summary":"Prototype Pollution in convict","modified":"2026-07-08T06:50:01.831796161Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"convict","purl":"pkg:npm/convict","ranges":["<6.2.3"],"fixed":["6.2.3"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
