{"cve":"CVE-2021-32760","nvd":{"published":"2021-07-19T21:15:07.857","modified":"2026-06-17T03:53:34.420","status":"Modified","description":"containerd is a container runtime. A bug was found in containerd versions prior to 1.4.8 and 1.5.4 where pulling and extracting a specially-crafted container image can result in Unix file permission changes for existing files in the host’s filesystem. Changes to file permissions can deny access to the expected owner of the file, widen access to others, or set extended bits like setuid, setgid, and sticky. This bug does not directly allow files to be read, modified, or executed without an additional cooperating process. This bug has been fixed in containerd 1.5.4 and 1.4.8. As a workaround, ensure that users only pull images from trusted sources. Linux security modules (LSMs) like SELinux and AppArmor can limit the files potentially affected by this bug through policies and profiles that prevent containerd from interacting with specific files.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L","score":6.3},"cwes":["CWE-732","CWE-668"],"references":["https://github.com/containerd/containerd/releases/tag/v1.4.8","https://github.com/containerd/containerd/releases/tag/v1.5.4","https://github.com/containerd/containerd/security/advisories/GHSA-c72p-9xmj-rx3w","https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce%40lists.fedoraproject.org/message/DDMNDPJJTP3J5GOEDB66F6MGXUTRG3Y3/","https://security.gentoo.org/glsa/202401-31"],"products":["fedoraproject:fedora","linuxfoundation:containerd"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:21:13.713336758+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2021-32760","score":0.01595,"percentile":0.75728,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-c72p-9xmj-rx3w","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-c72p-9xmj-rx3w","summary":"Archive package allows chmod of file outside of unpack target directory","modified":"2026-09-10T03:49:06.349612736Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containerd/containerd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containerd/containerd","ranges":["<1.4.8"],"fixed":["1.4.8"]},{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containerd/containerd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containerd/containerd","ranges":[">=1.5.0 <1.5.4"],"fixed":["1.5.4"]}]},{"id":"GO-2022-0921","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2022-0921","summary":"Archive package allows chmod of file outside of unpack target directory in github.com/containerd/containerd","modified":"2026-02-04T04:22:47.585130Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/containerd/containerd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containerd/containerd","ranges":["<1.4.8",">=1.5.0 <1.5.4"],"fixed":["1.4.8","1.5.4"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
