{"cve":"CVE-2021-29521","nvd":{"published":"2021-05-14T20:15:11.567","modified":"2026-06-17T03:47:49.623","status":"Modified","description":"TensorFlow is an end-to-end open source platform for machine learning. Specifying a negative dense shape in `tf.raw_ops.SparseCountSparseOutput` results in a segmentation fault being thrown out from the standard library as `std::vector` invariants are broken. This is because the implementation(https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/blob/8f7b60ee8c0206a2c99802e3a4d1bb55d2bc0624/tensorflow/core/kernels/count_ops.cc#L199-L213) assumes the first element of the dense shape is always positive and uses it to initialize a `BatchedMap<T>` (i.e., `std::vector<absl::flat_hash_map<int64,T>>`(https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/blob/8f7b60ee8c0206a2c99802e3a4d1bb55d2bc0624/tensorflow/core/kernels/count_ops.cc#L27)) data structure. If the `shape` tensor has more than one element, `num_batches` is the first value in `shape`. Ensuring that the `dense_shape` argument is a valid tensor shape (that is, all elements are non-negative) solves this issue. The fix will be included in TensorFlow 2.5.0. We will also cherrypick this commit on TensorFlow 2.4.2 and TensorFlow 2.3.3.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":5.5},"cwes":["CWE-131"],"references":["https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/commit/c57c0b9f3a4f8684f3489dd9a9ec627ad8b599f5","https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/security/advisories/GHSA-hr84-fqvp-48mm","https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/commit/c57c0b9f3a4f8684f3489dd9a9ec627ad8b599f5","https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/security/advisories/GHSA-hr84-fqvp-48mm"],"products":["google:tensorflow"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:18:09.669877188+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2021-29521","score":0.00189,"percentile":0.08574,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-hr84-fqvp-48mm","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-hr84-fqvp-48mm","summary":"Segfault in SparseCountSparseOutput","modified":"2026-09-10T03:49:14.741706917Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tensorflow","purl":"pkg:pypi/tensorflow","ranges":[">=2.3.0 <2.3.3"],"fixed":["2.3.3"]},{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tensorflow","purl":"pkg:pypi/tensorflow","ranges":[">=2.4.0 <2.4.2"],"fixed":["2.4.2"]},{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tensorflow-cpu","purl":"pkg:pypi/tensorflow-cpu","ranges":[">=2.3.0 <2.3.3"],"fixed":["2.3.3"]},{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tensorflow-cpu","purl":"pkg:pypi/tensorflow-cpu","ranges":[">=2.4.0 <2.4.2"],"fixed":["2.4.2"]},{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tensorflow-gpu","purl":"pkg:pypi/tensorflow-gpu","ranges":[">=2.3.0 <2.3.3"],"fixed":["2.3.3"]},{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tensorflow-gpu","purl":"pkg:pypi/tensorflow-gpu","ranges":[">=2.4.0 <2.4.2"],"fixed":["2.4.2"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2021-158","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2021-158","summary":"","modified":"2023-12-06T01:01:03.739052Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tensorflow","purl":"pkg:pypi/tensorflow","ranges":[">=2.3.0 <2.3.3",">=2.4.0 <2.4.2"],"fixed":["2.3.3","2.4.2"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2021-449","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2021-449","summary":"","modified":"2023-12-06T01:01:03.739052Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tensorflow-cpu","purl":"pkg:pypi/tensorflow-cpu","ranges":[">=2.3.0 <2.3.3",">=2.4.0 <2.4.2"],"fixed":["2.3.3","2.4.2"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2021-647","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2021-647","summary":"","modified":"2023-12-06T01:01:03.739052Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tensorflow-gpu","purl":"pkg:pypi/tensorflow-gpu","ranges":[">=2.3.0 <2.3.3",">=2.4.0 <2.4.2"],"fixed":["2.3.3","2.4.2"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
