Node-RED 1.2.7 and earlier has a vulnerability which allows arbitrary path traversal via the Projects API. If the Projects feature is enabled, a user with `projects.read` permission is able to access any file via the Projects API. The issue has been patched in Node-RED 1.2.8. The vulnerability applies only to the Projects feature which is not enabled by default in Node-RED. The primary workaround is not give untrusted users read access to the Node-RED editor.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N","score":6.5},"cwes":["CWE-22"],"references":["https://github.com/node-red/node-red/commit/74db3e17d075f23d9c95d7871586cf461524c456","https://github.com/node-red/node-red/releases/tag/1.2.8","https://github.com/node-red/node-red/security/advisories/GHSA-m33v-338h-4v9f","https://www.npmjs.com/package/%40node-red/runtime","https://github.com/node-red/node-red/commit/74db3e17d075f23d9c95d7871586cf461524c456"],"products":["nodered:node-red"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:15:50.279857260+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2021-21298","score":0.0108,"percentile":0.65113,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-m33v-338h-4v9f","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-m33v-338h-4v9f","summary":"Path traversal in Node-Red","modified":"2026-07-08T06:28:45.954945204Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"@node-red/runtime","purl":"pkg:npm/%40node-red/runtime","ranges":["<1.2.8"],"fixed":["1.2.8"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
