{"cve":"CVE-2020-26312","nvd":{"published":"2024-05-14T21:15:10.587","modified":"2026-06-17T03:08:03.413","status":"Deferred","description":"Dotmesh is a git-like command-line interface for capturing, organizing and sharing application states. In versions 0.8.1 and prior, the unsafe handling of symbolic links in an unpacking routine may \nenable attackers to read and/or write to arbitrary locations outside the\n designated target folder. The routine `untarFile` attempts to guard against creating symbolic links that point outside the directory a tar archive is extracted to. However, a malicious tarball first linking `subdir/parent` to `..` (allowed, because `subdir/..` falls within the archive root) and then linking `subdir/parent/escapes` to `..` results in a symbolic link pointing to the tarball’s parent directory, contrary to the routine’s goals. This issue may lead to arbitrary file write (with same permissions as the program running the unpack operation) if the attacker can control the archive file. Additionally, if the attacker has read access to the unpacked files, they may be able to read arbitrary system files the parent process has permissions to read. As of time of publication, no patch for this issue is available.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N","score":8.1},"cwes":["CWE-125","CWE-787"],"references":["https://github.com/dotmesh-io/dotmesh/blob/master/pkg/archiver/tar.go#L255","https://securitylab.github.com/advisories/GHSL-2020-254-zipslip-dotmesh/","https://github.com/dotmesh-io/dotmesh/blob/master/pkg/archiver/tar.go#L255","https://securitylab.github.com/advisories/GHSL-2020-254-zipslip-dotmesh/"],"products":[],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:49:23.840078609+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2020-26312","score":0.00441,"percentile":0.38361,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-hf54-fq2m-p9v6","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-hf54-fq2m-p9v6","summary":"dotmesh arbitrary file read and/or write","modified":"2024-06-05T16:43:05.949596Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/dotmesh-io/dotmesh","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/dotmesh-io/dotmesh","ranges":["<=0.8.1"],"fixed":[]}]},{"id":"GO-2024-2849","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GO-2024-2849","summary":"dotmesh arbitrary file read and/or write in github.com/dotmesh-io/dotmesh","modified":"2026-03-03T04:55:21.822492Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","name":"github.com/dotmesh-io/dotmesh","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/dotmesh-io/dotmesh","ranges":["all versions"],"fixed":[]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
