This allows an attacker who is able to serve multiple new versions of root metadata (i.e. by a person-in-the-middle attack) culminating in a version which has not been correctly signed to control the trust chain for future updates. This is fixed in version 0.12 and newer.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N","score":8.2},"cwes":["CWE-345","CWE-863"],"references":["https://github.com/theupdateframework/tuf/commit/3d342e648fbacdf43a13d7ba8886aaaf07334af7","https://github.com/theupdateframework/tuf/pull/885","https://github.com/theupdateframework/tuf/releases/tag/v0.12.0","https://github.com/theupdateframework/tuf/security/advisories/GHSA-f8mr-jv2c-v8mg","https://pypi.org/project/tuf"],"products":["linuxfoundation:the_update_framework"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T21:09:20.498348299+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2020-15163","score":0.0067,"percentile":0.52004,"date":"2026-11-01"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-f8mr-jv2c-v8mg","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-f8mr-jv2c-v8mg","summary":"Invalid root may become trusted root in The Update Framework (TUF)","modified":"2026-09-10T03:48:54.904097074Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tuf","purl":"pkg:pypi/tuf","ranges":["<0.12.0"],"fixed":["0.12.0"]}]},{"id":"PYSEC-2020-145","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2020-145","summary":"","modified":"2023-11-08T04:02:31.799548Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","name":"tuf","purl":"pkg:pypi/tuf","ranges":["<0.12.0"],"fixed":["0.12.0"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
