{"cve":"CVE-2019-8978","nvd":{"published":"2019-05-14T19:29:00.450","modified":"2026-06-17T02:42:51.450","status":"Modified","description":"An improper authentication vulnerability can be exploited through a race condition that occurs in Ellucian Banner Web Tailor 8.8.3, 8.8.4, and 8.9 and Banner Enterprise Identity Services 8.3, 8.3.1, 8.3.2, and 8.4, in conjunction with SSO Manager. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to steal a victim's session (and cause a denial of service) by repeatedly requesting the initial Banner Web Tailor main page with the IDMSESSID cookie set to the victim's UDCID, which in the case tested is the institutional ID. During a login attempt by a victim, the attacker can leverage the race condition and will be issued the SESSID that was meant for this victim.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.0","vector":"CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":8.1},"cwes":["CWE-287","CWE-362"],"references":["http://packetstormsecurity.com/files/152856/Ellucian-Banner-Web-Tailor-Banner-Enterprise-Identity-Services-Improper-Authentication.html","http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2019/May/18","https://ecommunities.ellucian.com/message/252749#252749","https://ecommunities.ellucian.com/message/252810#252810","https://raw.githubusercontent.com/JoshuaMulliken/CVE-2019-8978/master/README.txt"],"products":["ellucian:banner_enterprise_identity_services","ellucian:banner_web_tailor"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:56:19.218283075+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2019-8978","score":0.05858,"percentile":0.93192,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
