The vulnerability exists in the page.open() function of the webpage module, which loads a specified URL and calls a given callback. An attacker can supply a specially crafted HTML file, as user input, that allows reading arbitrary files on the filesystem. For example, if page.render() is the function callback, this generates a PDF or an image of the targeted file. NOTE: this product is no longer developed.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N","score":7.5},"cwes":["CWE-552"],"references":["https://www.darkmatter.ae/blogs/breaching-the-perimeter-phantomjs-arbitrary-file-read/","https://www.darkmatter.ae/blogs/breaching-the-perimeter-phantomjs-arbitrary-file-read/"],"products":["phantomjs:phantomjs"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:59:25.448946135+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2019-17221","score":0.03424,"percentile":0.88917,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-x43g-gj9x-838x","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-x43g-gj9x-838x","summary":"PhantomJS Arbitrary File Read","modified":"2023-11-08T04:01:23.069081Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"phantomjs","purl":"pkg:npm/phantomjs","ranges":["<=2.1.1"],"fixed":[]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
