{"cve":"CVE-2019-16775","nvd":{"published":"2019-12-13T01:15:10.817","modified":"2026-06-17T02:22:46.560","status":"Modified","description":"Versions of the npm CLI prior to 6.13.3 are vulnerable to an Arbitrary File Write. It is possible for packages to create symlinks to files outside of thenode_modules folder through the bin field upon installation. A properly constructed entry in the package.json bin field would allow a package publisher to create a symlink pointing to arbitrary files on a user's system when the package is installed. This behavior is still possible through install scripts. This vulnerability bypasses a user using the --ignore-scripts install option.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N","score":6.5},"cwes":["CWE-59","CWE-61"],"references":["http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-security-announce/2020-01/msg00027.html","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHEA-2020:0330","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2020:0573","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2020:0579","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2020:0597"],"products":["fedoraproject:fedora","npmjs:npm","opensuse:leap","oracle:graalvm","redhat:enterprise_linux","redhat:enterprise_linux_eus"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:59:27.069234358+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2019-16775","score":0.03334,"percentile":0.88635,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-m6cx-g6qm-p2cx","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-m6cx-g6qm-p2cx","summary":"Arbitrary File Write in npm","modified":"2026-09-10T03:49:24.837397986Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","name":"npm","purl":"pkg:npm/npm","ranges":["<6.13.3"],"fixed":["6.13.3"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
