{"cve":"CVE-2019-13272","nvd":{"published":"2019-07-17T13:15:10.687","modified":"2026-06-17T02:16:26.033","status":"Analyzed","description":"In the Linux kernel before 5.1.17, ptrace_link in kernel/ptrace.c mishandles the recording of the credentials of a process that wants to create a ptrace relationship, which allows local users to obtain root access by leveraging certain scenarios with a parent-child process relationship, where a parent drops privileges and calls execve (potentially allowing control by an attacker). One contributing factor is an object lifetime issue (which can also cause a panic). Another contributing factor is incorrect marking of a ptrace relationship as privileged, which is exploitable through (for example) Polkit's pkexec helper with PTRACE_TRACEME. NOTE: SELinux deny_ptrace might be a usable workaround in some environments.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.8},"cwes":[],"references":["http://packetstormsecurity.com/files/153663/Linux-PTRACE_TRACEME-Broken-Permission-Object-Lifetime-Handling.html","http://packetstormsecurity.com/files/153702/Slackware-Security-Advisory-Slackware-14.2-kernel-Updates.html","http://packetstormsecurity.com/files/154245/Kernel-Live-Patch-Security-Notice-LSN-0054-1.html","http://packetstormsecurity.com/files/154957/Linux-Polkit-pkexec-Helper-PTRACE_TRACEME-Local-Root.html","http://packetstormsecurity.com/files/156929/Linux-PTRACE_TRACEME-Local-Root.html"],"products":["canonical:ubuntu_linux","debian:debian_linux","fedoraproject:fedora","linux:linux_kernel","netapp:active_iq_unified_manager","netapp:aff_a700s_firmware","netapp:e-series_performance_analyzer","netapp:e-series_santricity_os_controller","netapp:h410c_firmware","netapp:h610s_firmware","netapp:hci_compute_node","netapp:hci_management_node","netapp:service_processor","netapp:solidfire","netapp:steelstore_cloud_integrated_storage","redhat:enterprise_linux","redhat:enterprise_linux_for_arm_64","redhat:enterprise_linux_for_ibm_z_systems","redhat:enterprise_linux_for_real_time","redhat:enterprise_linux_for_real_time_for_nfv","redhat:enterprise_linux_for_real_time_for_nfv_tus","redhat:enterprise_linux_for_real_time_tus"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:58:11.797917892+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2019-13272","score":0.52199,"percentile":0.98959,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":{"cve":"CVE-2019-13272","date_added":"2021-12-10","due_date":"2022-06-10","vendor":"Linux","product":"Kernel","known_ransomware":false},"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
