{"cve":"CVE-2018-8039","nvd":{"published":"2018-07-02T13:29:00.413","modified":"2026-06-17T02:04:09.353","status":"Modified","description":"It is possible to configure Apache CXF to use the com.sun.net.ssl implementation via 'System.setProperty(\"java.protocol.handler.pkgs\", \"com.sun.net.ssl.internal.www.protocol\");'. When this system property is set, CXF uses some reflection to try to make the HostnameVerifier work with the old com.sun.net.ssl.HostnameVerifier interface. However, the default HostnameVerifier implementation in CXF does not implement the method in this interface, and an exception is thrown. However, in Apache CXF prior to 3.2.5 and 3.1.16 the exception is caught in the reflection code and not properly propagated. What this means is that if you are using the com.sun.net.ssl stack with CXF, an error with TLS hostname verification will not be thrown, leaving a CXF client subject to man-in-the-middle attacks.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.0","vector":"CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":8.1},"cwes":["CWE-755"],"references":["http://cxf.apache.org/security-advisories.data/CVE-2018-8039.txt.asc?version=1&modificationDate=1530184663000&api=v2","http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/106357","http://www.securitytracker.com/id/1041199","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2018:2276","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2018:2277"],"products":["apache:cxf","redhat:jboss_enterprise_application_platform"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:51:47.459859389+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2018-8039","score":0.08507,"percentile":0.95039,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-jc7r-v6fg-2gpf","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-jc7r-v6fg-2gpf","summary":"Apache CXF TLS hostname verification does not work correctly with com.sun.net.ssl.*","modified":"2025-05-29T18:06:46.271168Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.apache.cxf:cxf-rt-transports-http","purl":"pkg:maven/org.apache.cxf/cxf-rt-transports-http","ranges":[">=3.2.0 <3.2.5"],"fixed":["3.2.5"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.apache.cxf:cxf-rt-transports-http","purl":"pkg:maven/org.apache.cxf/cxf-rt-transports-http","ranges":["<3.1.16"],"fixed":["3.1.16"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.apache.cxf:apache-cxf","purl":"pkg:maven/org.apache.cxf/apache-cxf","ranges":[">=3.2.0 <3.2.5"],"fixed":["3.2.5"]},{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.apache.cxf:apache-cxf","purl":"pkg:maven/org.apache.cxf/apache-cxf","ranges":["<3.1.16"],"fixed":["3.1.16"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
