{"cve":"CVE-2018-7169","nvd":{"published":"2018-02-15T20:29:00.867","modified":"2026-06-17T02:02:43.910","status":"Modified","description":"An issue was discovered in shadow 4.5. newgidmap (in shadow-utils) is setuid and allows an unprivileged user to be placed in a user namespace where setgroups(2) is permitted. This allows an attacker to remove themselves from a supplementary group, which may allow access to certain filesystem paths if the administrator has used \"group blacklisting\" (e.g., chmod g-rwx) to restrict access to paths. This flaw effectively reverts a security feature in the kernel (in particular, the /proc/self/setgroups knob) to prevent this sort of privilege escalation.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.0","vector":"CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N","score":5.3},"cwes":["CWE-732"],"references":["https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shadow/+bug/1729357","https://security.gentoo.org/glsa/201805-09","https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shadow/+bug/1729357","https://security.gentoo.org/glsa/201805-09"],"products":["shadow_project:shadow"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:48:34.567387330+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2018-7169","score":0.01566,"percentile":0.75313,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
