{"cve":"CVE-2018-5382","nvd":{"published":"2018-04-16T14:29:01.047","modified":"2026-06-17T02:00:13.640","status":"Modified","description":"The default BKS keystore use an HMAC that is only 16 bits long, which can allow an attacker to compromise the integrity of a BKS keystore. Bouncy Castle release 1.47 changes the BKS format to a format which uses a 160 bit HMAC instead. This applies to any BKS keystore generated prior to BC 1.47. For situations where people need to create the files for legacy reasons a specific keystore type \"BKS-V1\" was introduced in 1.49. It should be noted that the use of \"BKS-V1\" is discouraged by the library authors and should only be used where it is otherwise safe to do so, as in where the use of a 16 bit checksum for the file integrity check is not going to cause a security issue in itself.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N","score":4.4},"cwes":["CWE-354","CWE-327"],"references":["http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/103453","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2018:2927","https://www.bouncycastle.org/releasenotes.html","https://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/306792","https://www.oracle.com/security-alerts/cpuoct2020.html"],"products":["bouncycastle:bc-java","redhat:satellite","redhat:satellite_capsule"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:49:59.483420567+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2018-5382","score":0.0026,"percentile":0.17834,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-8477-3v39-ggpm","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-8477-3v39-ggpm","summary":"Improper Validation of Integrity Check Value in Bouncy Castle","modified":"2023-11-08T04:00:20.719699Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.bouncycastle:bcprov-jdk15on","purl":"pkg:maven/org.bouncycastle/bcprov-jdk15on","ranges":["<1.50"],"fixed":["1.50"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
