{"cve":"CVE-2018-1196","nvd":{"published":"2018-03-19T18:29:00.387","modified":"2026-06-17T01:50:41.020","status":"Modified","description":"Spring Boot supports an embedded launch script that can be used to easily run the application as a systemd or init.d linux service. The script included with Spring Boot 1.5.9 and earlier and 2.0.0.M1 through 2.0.0.M7 is susceptible to a symlink attack which allows the \"run_user\" to overwrite and take ownership of any file on the same system. In order to instigate the attack, the application must be installed as a service and the \"run_user\" requires shell access to the server. Spring Boot application that are not installed as a service, or are not using the embedded launch script are not susceptible.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.0","vector":"CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N","score":5.9},"cwes":["CWE-59"],"references":["https://pivotal.io/security/cve-2018-1196","https://pivotal.io/security/cve-2018-1196"],"products":["vmware:spring_boot"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:48:50.842038930+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2018-1196","score":0.01212,"percentile":0.68502,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-xx65-cc7g-9pfp","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-xx65-cc7g-9pfp","summary":"Moderate severity vulnerability that affects org.springframework.boot:spring-boot","modified":"2023-11-08T03:59:48.367735Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.springframework.boot:spring-boot","purl":"pkg:maven/org.springframework.boot/spring-boot","ranges":[">=1.5.0 <1.5.10"],"fixed":["1.5.10"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
