{"cve":"CVE-2018-11796","nvd":{"published":"2018-10-09T22:29:00.393","modified":"2026-06-17T01:36:36.900","status":"Modified","description":"In Apache Tika 1.19 (CVE-2018-11761), we added an entity expansion limit for XML parsing. However, Tika reuses SAXParsers and calls reset() after each parse, which, for Xerces2 parsers, as per the documentation, removes the user-specified SecurityManager and thus removes entity expansion limits after the first parse. Apache Tika versions from 0.1 to 1.19 are therefore still vulnerable to entity expansions which can lead to a denial of service attack. Users should upgrade to 1.19.1 or later.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.0","vector":"CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","score":7.5},"cwes":["CWE-611"],"references":["http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/105585","https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2019:3892","https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/88de8350cda9b184888ec294c813c5bd8a2081de8fd3666f8904bc05%40%3Cdev.tika.apache.org%3E","https://security.netapp.com/advisory/ntap-20190903-0002/","http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/105585"],"products":["apache:tika"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:53:14.491561039+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2018-11796","score":0.07537,"percentile":0.94509,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-h8q5-g2cj-qr5h","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-h8q5-g2cj-qr5h","summary":"Apache Tika is vulnerable to entity expansions which can lead to a denial of service attack","modified":"2024-02-16T08:07:07.926981Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"Maven","name":"org.apache.tika:tika-core","purl":"pkg:maven/org.apache.tika/tika-core","ranges":[">=0.1 <1.19.1"],"fixed":["1.19.1"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
