Insecure handling of temporary files in the KTextEditor's kauth_ktexteditor_helper service (as utilized in the Kate text editor) can allow other unprivileged users on the local system to gain root privileges. The attack occurs when one user (who has an unprivileged account but is also able to authenticate as root) writes a text file using Kate into a directory owned by a another unprivileged user. The latter unprivileged user conducts a symlink attack to achieve privilege escalation.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.0","vector":"CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.8},"cwes":["CWE-668"],"references":["http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2018/04/24/1","http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2019/07/09/3","https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1033055","http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2018/04/24/1","http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2019/07/09/3"],"products":["kde:ktexteditor"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:49:59.483420567+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2018-10361","score":0.0038,"percentile":0.3203,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
