{"cve":"CVE-2017-18509","nvd":{"published":"2019-08-13T14:15:11.977","modified":"2026-06-17T01:13:00.343","status":"Modified","description":"An issue was discovered in net/ipv6/ip6mr.c in the Linux kernel before 4.11. By setting a specific socket option, an attacker can control a pointer in kernel land and cause an inet_csk_listen_stop general protection fault, or potentially execute arbitrary code under certain circumstances. The issue can be triggered as root (e.g., inside a default LXC container or with the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability) or after namespace unsharing. This occurs because sk_type and protocol are not checked in the appropriate part of the ip6_mroute_* functions. NOTE: this affects Linux distributions that use 4.9.x longterm kernels before 4.9.187.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":7.8},"cwes":["CWE-20"],"references":["http://packetstormsecurity.com/files/154059/Slackware-Security-Advisory-Slackware-14.2-kernel-Updates.html","https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=99253eb750fda6a644d5188fb26c43bad8d5a745","https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/99253eb750fda6a644d5188fb26c43bad8d5a745","https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2019/08/msg00016.html","https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2019/08/msg00017.html"],"products":["canonical:ubuntu_linux","debian:debian_linux","linux:linux_kernel"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:58:11.797917892+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2017-18509","score":0.00839,"percentile":0.57834,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
