{"cve":"CVE-2015-8968","nvd":{"published":"2016-11-03T10:59:00.197","modified":"2026-06-17T00:35:35.157","status":"Modified","description":"git-fastclone before 1.0.1 permits arbitrary shell command execution from .gitmodules. If an attacker can instruct a user to run a recursive clone from a repository they control, they can get a client to run an arbitrary shell command. Alternately, if an attacker can MITM an unencrypted git clone, they could exploit this. The ext command will be run if the repository is recursively cloned or if submodules are updated. This attack works when cloning both local and remote repositories.","cvss_v4":null,"cvss_v3":{"version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":8.8},"cwes":["CWE-77"],"references":["http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/81433","https://github.com/square/git-fastclone/pull/2","https://hackerone.com/reports/104465","http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/81433","https://github.com/square/git-fastclone/pull/2"],"products":["squareup:git-fastclone"],"source":"nvd","synced_at":"2026-10-19T20:40:10.783210791+00:00"},"epss":{"cve":"CVE-2015-8968","score":0.05198,"percentile":0.92478,"date":"2026-10-31"},"kev":null,"osv":[{"id":"GHSA-8gg6-3r63-25m8","url":"https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-8gg6-3r63-25m8","summary":"git-fastclone permits arbitrary shell command execution from .gitmodules","modified":"2024-02-16T08:19:15.092365Z","packages":[{"ecosystem":"RubyGems","name":"git-fastclone","purl":"pkg:gem/git-fastclone","ranges":["<1.0.1"],"fixed":["1.0.1"]}]}],"attribution":["This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.","EPSS scores: FIRST Exploit Prediction Scoring System, https://www.first.org/epss","Known exploited vulnerabilities: CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog","Package advisories: OSV (https://osv.dev), from the GitHub Advisory Database, PyPA, Go, RustSec and other ecosystem databases, under CC-BY 4.0 or CC0","CVE records: the CVE Program's CVE List (https://www.cve.org), under its terms of use (https://www.cve.org/Legal/TermsOfUse).
